Yeeee Haaah!! I have received my first spam message!!
Akismet identified it first go.
Here’s the text of the spam I received.
“Hello, I think your website might be having browser compatibility issues. When I look at your blog in Ie, it looks fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping. I just wanted to give you a quick heads up! Other then that, great blog!”
Looks good, don’t it, aye?
Initially, I thought that I would go against Akismet’s recommendation because I am an ubercomputing guy and just so fsking clever, so who is Akismet to tell me what is spam and what is not.
I mean, just read the text again and you tell me that a REAL LIVE PERSON did not write that and oh, the email address had a beautiful female name as well.
So I marked it as not spam.
Of cos, it went to the normal Comments section awaiting approval.
I was just about to approve it when I decided, for no reason, to check on the URL which Velotta (yeah, such a pretty name, isn’t it?) gave as her home page.
Clicking on on her link caused a connection reset!! WTF!!!
OK, maybe it was my Internet connection. I mean, it couldn’t be Velotta, right? Such a pretty name, right?
I clicked on it again and yes, I got to some parked domain held by some cybersquatter.
WTF!! Where’s Velotta? Where a pic, just one pic, of Velotta?
Oh, oh, it started to dawn on me that maybe, just maybe perhaps possibly, Akismet might be right, on the off chance if you know what I mean 🙂
Hm… now what?
How do I prove Akismet was right and I was wrong?
I decided to copy the entire text of the spam comment (yes, by now I am starting to accept the fact that Velotta is probably a goddamned spammer) and pasted it into Google.
Good grief!! You can see for yourself what came up – go on, it’s safe to click on the google link.
I can guarantee that the Google search results page is perfectly safe – just don’t go to any of the links shown as I cannot vouch for any of those pages, ok?.
As I am using a bulletproof operating system and a rather weird browser, I clicked on some of the links shown to have a look at what info I could glean.
Yupe, a couple of the links were by bloggers who have done basically the same as I am doing now, i.e. displayed the text and point out it is spam, others just have it in their website but it does not seem to appear anywhere on their website.
Looking at the dates, it seems that the spam has been around for a long while, since at least 2012 anyway.
Sadly, I had to admit to myself that Velotta is not who she said she was and sent her back to the spam folder.
I was sucked in by a very simple trick 🙁
Akismet was right and I was wrong.
It was SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM!!!
🙂
My friend told me that don’t open the email she sent to me because she don’t send email without subject. The other friend went to open the email, then she faced difficulties to log in, the screen is completely dark. The spammer used a lot of tricks and made people’s life difficult. Luckily Moses can manage to rescue the website.
Well, lucky for your friends they have you who can help them with their computer problems 🙂
