Say medieval re-enactments and most people think of this. Well, I did 🙂
Yes, it is all about dressing up, wining, dining, some falconary with a joust or two.
But the Battle of the Nations takes it up another notch.
It is real war!! Well, sort of 🙂
Looks like fun – if one likes getting beaten up 🙂

Some pictures show that the event of “The battle of the Nations” like family day. Father and son wearing the same track suit. like the warriors. The fighting using real swords? Any body injured?
Oh yes, the swords are REAL.
They are not sharpened, though.
May be the battle a bit vigorous. People fighting for fun or money? Safety should be the priority.
It is all done for fun, believe it or not 🙂
May be to win the battle needs skills, techniques and teamwork, that’s why people like it and treat it as a game. Injured members just sent to the hospital 🙂 They will get well soon to prove that they are really healthy 🙂
You are probably right in saying that there is the gaming aspect to something like The Battle of the Nations.
I feel there is also the historical interest in that period of European history which enhances the gaming experience.
TBOTN is a bit more extreme in its medieval re-enactments but there are other more pleasant and relaxing re-enanctments, for example the festival which was held over the weekend in Tasmania.

Most of the tourist interested in medieval costumes with a competition featuring plenty of knights. I think this festival will attract the tourist from all over the world to witness the battle. My friend paid 2 US dollars recently just for taking pictures with the full costumes knight at the entrance of Petra rock at Jordon 🙂
